The horror-themed psychobilly band NEKROMANTIX brought their 30th Anniversary Tour to downtown Las Vegas and the Fremont Country Club, and fans were lined up down the street waiting to get inside when we arrived. Also on the bill was STELLAR CORPSES, CRASH MIDNIGHT and CHERRY RAT.
Local rockabilly band CHERRY RAT got the night started, a band I caught earlier this year at the big rockabilly festival Viva Las Vegas, and I was thoroughly impressed with this band. The band is led by tattooed blonde bombshell Cherry Rat on vocals and acoustic guitar, Lee Jack on guitars, Kavera on stand up bass and Kirk on drums. The band's sound is infectious, and had some fans in the crowd dancing. and swinging, and were a great kickoff for the show.
CRASH MIDNIGHT is more of a rock n roll band, but they played a special set from their early days that was more old school rock with lots of punk tossed in, and won over the rockabilly crowd. At one point Big Daddy Carlos, owner of the FCC venue joined the band onstage for a song and a good time.
STELLAR CORPSES, a Psychobilly / Horrorpunk band from Santa Carla,CA, were exceptional in both their sound and stage show - lead singer Dusty Grave came out with his face painted up like a skeleton, and proceeded to take control of the room and get the biggest mosh pit of the night going. The band was sensati
onal and was all over the stage, running back and forth, and at one point guitarist Skye Vaughn jumped off the stage and onto the barricade and proceeded to sing in the crowd. Stellar Corpses has toured the world opening for some of the biggest bands of their genre such as The Misfits and The Damned, and put on a great high energy show as the lead in for The Nekromantix to come.
Danish horror punks the NEKROMANTIX were the kings of the show, led by founder and frontman Kim Nekroman, who is instantly recognizable by his custom-built coffin double bass. Nekroman has been the sole constant member of the band, who has had their share of changing drummers in the last few years but are solidified at present with long time guitarist Francisco Mesa (who has been with the band since 2008), and drummer Rene "Dlamuerte" Garcia from The Brains, who joined in 2018. The band played a set that spanned their 30 year career for this Anniversary Show, and has recently released a concert film Blu-ray/DVD/CD combo pack in honor of the band’s 30th Anniversary titled Nekromantix:3 Decades of Darkle. It contains exclusive interviews and rare photos of this legendary band, available HERE.
