King Diamond and the Saint Lucifer's Tour made it to the Virgin Theater in Las Vegas, with Overkill and Night Demon supporting for this mega night of metal!
There was a little confusion as to start time, so when openers NIGHT DEMON took to the stage they unfortunately wound up playing to a smaller crowd, but the band really blasted those who were there early, telling them "it looks like you're going to get a private show", and what a kick off to the show.
This traditional metal power trio from Ventura came out hard with "Ritual" from their very first album, along with "The Chalice" and titled "Night Demon", before bridging the years to "Outsider" from their 2023 album of the same name. Their set was a bit short, and the stage unusually dark, but the Demons made an impact and they really fit well in the line up. More on Night Demon and the new album HERE.
OVERKILL is on the tour celebrating the fact they have been keeping thrash alive for 44 years now... Lead singer Bobby Blitz Ellsworth has had his fair share of health issues, from a stroke to cancer, but he's still on stage sounded amazing as well as the rest of the band.
Overkill opened with a punch with "Scorched", the title track off their last LP of the same name, and the set featured "Surgeon" from the new LP as well, and also reached across their extensive catalogue for "Rotten to the Core" and "Hello From the Gutter".
The band closed out the set with the Subhumans song “Fuck You”, a bit short and Ellsworth may have been a little under the weather. With 20 albums under their belt it is impossible to please everyone and really show their full influence, but I think they did a pretty good job with the time they had. KING DIAMOND and his theatrical show of horrors filled the stage, with his piercing falsetto screams and over the top production, the crowd was really there to see this crazy show and the madman in action.
The tour is named Saint Lucifer's Hospital 1920, and the set was a three story huge structure that featured twin staircases on each side, the drummer in the middle on the 2nd floor, and a walkway high above. The show opened up with taped music of "The Funeral" playing, King at a podium engraved with the name Abigail, center stage, holding a baby and a large knife, before he thrust down the baby's throat and the King broke into "Arrival" from the 80's album Abigail, and the show was on.
The set wove between songs from the 80's records, a couple of new songs, “Spider Lilly and “Electro Therapy”, (from an as of now unnamed upcoming release), and this show had it all, horror, theatrics, top notch musicianship, including bassist Pontus Egberg, drummer Matt Thompson, and guitarist Mike Wead. King Diamond brought along fellow Dane and special guest Myrkur, who played keyboards and sang background vocals, although it would have been nice to see her down on the main stage instead of way up high on the side. The set was long, broken up with ethereal taped music to go with dramatic acting on stage between live songs, before the show wound to and encore that came full circle with the song “Abigail”.
